Quoting from the book by Morris Schaff written in 1905. ETNA and KIRKERSVILLE. "The town of Kirkersville was founded about 1831 and was named for Thomas Kirker, acting governor in 1808. As soon as the National Road was finished, it rose into local importance for it was made a point where horses were changed on all the stage lines. Three or more taverns sprang up. When I was a boy I remember there were two, NEISWANDER'S OLD VIRGINIA and the NATIONAL, kept by MR. JAMES O'KANE, whose nephew CAPTAIN JAMES O'KANE graduated at Annapolis and was aboard the BROOKLYN when it led FARRAGUT'S Fleet against Forts Jackson and St. Philip below New Orleans. My eldest brother, DAVID ALEXANDER (SCHAFF) married HANNAH, the eldest daughter of JAMES O'KANE." |
